How to deal with PCOD

A 26 yrs old Sushma came to our clinic with irregular periods, weight gain, disinterest in life and daily activities. On investigations she was diagnosed with PCOD.

Let us see What is PCOD?

PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) is a complex hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. PCOD has risen many folds in the last three decades. Dealing with PCOD involves a multifaceted approach aimed at managing symptoms, improving overall health, and reducing the risk of complications. Risk of complications include mental as well as physical. Here are some general strategies to manage PCOD:

  1. Consult with a Healthcare Professional: It’s crucial to consult your family doctor who would take an opinion of a gynecologist or endocrinologist, who can provide an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Every girl / lady is a different person and engaged in different lifestyle with different mindset, hence specifications in treatment and personalized treatment plan is most important.
  2. Lifestyle Modifications: MEDS play important role. MEDS stands for Mindset, Exercise, Diet and Sleep schedule
    • Diet: Adopt a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Limit intake of processed foods, sugary snacks, and high-fat foods. Low glycaemic index foods may be beneficial in managing insulin resistance associated with PCOD.
    • Exercise: There is difference between fitness and health. Dealing with PCOD would be part of good health. Regular physical activity can help improve insulin sensitivity, keep weight under control, and reduce symptoms of PCOD. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming. Also add to it yoga and pranayam which help in tackling PCOD
    • Weight Management: Most of the PCOD girls are overweight. If overweight or obese, even modest weight loss (5-10% of body weight) can improve symptoms and hormonal balance in women with PCOD.
  3. Medications: Should be taken as per instructions of consultant.
  4. Management of Specific Symptoms: Symptomatic treatments would be advised as per requirement.
  5. Regular Monitoring and Follow-Up: Treatment of PCOD is a bit time consuming and regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are essential to monitor symptoms, evaluate treatment efficacy, and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.
  6. Emotional Support: Mind body connection plays an important role in dealing with PCOD and it can be emotionally challenging due to its impact on fertility, body image, and quality of life. Seeking support from loved ones, joining support groups, or talking to a therapist can be beneficial. The most important emotion of easily give away what is not necessary.

Most of the times the diagnosis is during the time of fertility goal. Remember, PCOD management is often a long-term process, and treatment strategies may vary based on individual factors such as symptom severity, reproductive goals, and overall health status. Working closely with your healthcare provider and adopting a holistic approach to lifestyle and medical management can help you effectively manage PCOD and improve your quality of life.
